Complete Guide to Adopting Puppies in Medellín
Deciding to add a new furry member to the family is a life-changing step. In our city, thousands of dogs await a second chance in various shelters and foster homes. This guide is designed to accompany you through every stage of this beautiful process.
Why adopt and not buy?
Adoption is an act of love and social responsibility. By welcoming a rescued dog, you are not only saving a life, but you are also freeing up vital space in a shelter so that another homeless animal can be rescued. Additionally, mixed-breed dogs often have stronger genetic health.
The positive impact on local shelters
Foundations in the Aburrá Valley work tirelessly and, most of the time, exceed their maximum capacity. When you adopt, you become an active part of the solution to the problem of canine overpopulation and abandonment.
The adaptation process at home
The first few days are crucial. A rescued dog may come with previous fears or traumas. It is essential to establish a clear routine for feeding and walks, giving them their own safe space to begin to trust their new environment at their own pace.
Basic requirements to apply as an adopter
To ensure the animal's well-being, most foundations will request the following before approving adoption:
-
Detailed application form.
-
Virtual or in-person interview with the family.
-
Home video (to check security on balconies and doors).
-
Commitment to monthly photographic follow-up.
Legal note on mandatory vaccinations and sterilization
All dogs given up for adoption must be up to date with their vaccination schedule (quintuple and rabies), dewormed, and, by law, sterilized to prevent irresponsible breeding. In the case of puppies, the adopter signs a commitment to sterilize at 6 months of age.
